Finnish Lapland: 5 Activities You Can’t Miss

So many people ask, “What is there to do in Finnish Lapland amidst all those walls of snow?

We set off for this adventure super pumped, traveled far and wide, saw mind-blowing places, crossed enchanting forests, the sky moved us with stunning sunrises and sunsets, and most importantly, we fully lived the natural experience with activities that will forever stay in our hearts.

But back to business—here are the 5 activities you absolutely cannot miss if you visit Lapland.

1-SLEDDOG SAFARI

The Sleddog Safari is definitely one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences you have to try.

After a quick briefing on handling the dogs and the sleigh, we sped off into a completely snow-covered forest. We chose the 5 km experience, about 30 minutes of actual run time. Afterward, we had time to cuddle the dogs that pulled us and meet some adorable puppies. Once the experience finished, we sat by the fire inside a Kota (a traditional Lappish hut) to eat sausages and sip hot tea.

The Price for the experience is 79€ per person, with the option to use their technical gear so you don’t feel the cold.

We did this experience in Kuusamo with Winter Village Lammintupa.

2-SAMPO ICEBREAKER

Sailing on the Sampo Icebreaker ship was one of the best experiences of our lives, and this vessel is the only one used for tourism. The light was incredible and the feeling of infinity while cruising was unforgettable—the ice crumbled as if it were a sugar cube.

During the stop, when the ship’s engines turn off, you get the chance to take a dip in the Baltic Sea while wearing floating survival suits.

The duration is about 3 and a half hours, the price is 275€ per person, and we highly recommend booking well in advance on the Arctic Icebreaker Cruise website.

3-CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING AND SNOWSHOEING

Renting cross-country skis or snowshoes in Pyhä to traverse the Luosto National Park is a must-do for your Lapland trip. These enchanted forests are even more beautiful when admired from within, and there’s no better way to do that than with this type of gear.

Walking into the forest on foot means sinking into the snow up to your mid-leg, but with snowshoes or skis, you can fully enjoy the scenery (though it’s still a workout!).

If you arrive by car, after the bridge on the left, you’ll find a **small wooden cabin** where Juhan Voitelupalvelu, a super friendly and helpful gentleman, will rent you the equipment (price: 20€ per person for about 3 hours).

4-SNOWMOBILING AND ICEFISHING

We teamed up with Kinos Safaris and had a blast! We zoomed for about 30 km through wind, snow, and fog before stopping in the middle of a **frozen lake**. There, we drilled a hole in the ice, baited our hooks, and tried our hand at lake fishing. To top it off, we warmed up inside a Kota with sausages and coffee.

Unlike all the other groups we saw, where people shared one snowmobile, we had one each! This allows you to go faster and truly embrace the snowmobiling spirit. Of course, this is reflected in the price, which is higher (price 257€ per person for about 6 hours).

5-ICE KARTING

Finally, let us tell you about our challenge on the ice! With Icekarting Levi you can race karts and challenge your friends on a completely frozen track. Two 15-minute rounds of zooming, drifting, spinning out, and guaranteed thrills. Gear is provided by them, price 65€ per person.
