Sorrento: What to see, where to eat and where to stay.
Sorrento is the first stop of our Amalfi Coast tour: a sparkling town overlooking the Gulf of Naples, celebrated by poets, songs and paintings. Between narrow streets dotted with artisan shops and panoramic terraces, it feels like living inside a postcard.
Known for its lemons and the unmistakable limoncello, Sorrento welcomes visitors looking for history, culture, good food and that warm hospitality typical of Southern Italy. In just one day we gathered unforgettable emotions, flavors and views.
WHAT TO DO IN ONE DAY
1. Piazza Torquato Tasso and the Old Town
The main square of Sorrento dotted with bars and cafés.
An interesting place to visit near the square is the baroque church of the Carmine sanctuary; from here Corso Italia, the shopping street, begins.
From the bridge that connects the square to Via San Cesareo you can stop to admire a fantastic view of the Bay of Sorrento.
Then continue along Via San Cesareo, the main street of the old town, full of small adjacent alleyways and typical shops.
2. Marina Grande and Marina Piccola
Two very characteristic small beaches easily reachable on foot from the center.
Marina Grande, an old fishermen’s quarter, was also a location in 1955 for the film “Pane, amore e …” with Sophia Loren. And, of course, during the walk you must admire the splendid panorama from the many terraces along the route.
3. Cloister of San Francesco
This corner of paradise where you can relax even during hot summer days is located near the Villa Comunale and is accessed through the arch next to the entrance of the church of the same name.
It tells the story of the town and the different influences it received over the centuries.
4. Villa Comunale
It stands on the former garden of the Franciscan friars and with its view it is certainly one of the unmissable points in Sorrento to enjoy the sea breeze and the panorama of the entire Gulf.
The descent to the sea is wonderful for enjoying the landscape, but for the lazier there is the option of using an elevator.
At the entrance to the park there is a cheerful mural depicting Lucio Dalla, Sophia Loren and Enrico Caruso, 3 iconic figures of Sorrento.
5. Vallone dei Mulini (Valley of the Mills)
This Vallone dei Mulini in Sorrento, although inaccessible, is one of the city’s most Instagrammable attractions.
It is located right in the historic center and is something unique; it is the ruin of a mill about 700 years old, but abandoned in the early 1900s.
6. Bagni della Regina Giovanna
Surely one of the hidden gems to discover in this area.
Still unspoiled, it can be reached in about 50 minutes on foot from Capo Sorrento via a well-marked path, or by taking the bus that goes from the station towards Massa Lubrense.
Before deciding to go there it is always better to check opening status, as sometimes it is closed due to accessibility issues.
WHERE TO SLEEP IN SORRENTO
We chose Laqua Charme & Boutique and we couldn’t have asked for more.
A sweet and refined environment where you can relax with the private infinity pool over the gulf, it’s something incredible; Cinzia and Antonino have made this little place a unique mix of hospitality and relaxation, made with natural materials and soft, embracing colors.
It is located in Meta, 6 km from the center of Sorrento.
WHERE TO EAT IN SORRENTO
We had lunch at Ristorante Fuoro, in the narrow streets of the town, and dinner at Ristorante o’Parrucchino surrounded by little lights and bunches of lemons. (You can find all details in our article Where to eat on the Amalfi Coast: 7 Restaurants to try).
